Hallmarks

A hallmark is an official stamp on items made of precious metals like gold, platinum, palladium or silver. This mark will guarantee you the purity of the metal.

White gold and platinum can be easily confused since they are very similar in colour but their price it isn’t so a hallmark will help identify the metal and its purity.

The 1973 Hallmarking Act established that it is unlawful to describe an item over a certain weight as platinum, silver, gold or palladium without having an independently Hallmark stamped.

  • Silver items weighing more than 7.78 grams must be hallmarked.
  • Gold items weighing more than 1 gram must be hallmarked.
  • Platinum items weighing more than 0.5 grams must be hallmarked.
  • Palladium items weighing more than 1 gram must be hallmarked.

If an item weights below the above weights, it can be described as Silver, Gold, Platinum or Palladium without the need of a hallmark.
